It is with deep regret that we announce the passing of Bill VanGorder on September 6th at Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Bill passed away in his wife’s (Esther) arms. After 6 weeks, two surgeries in a week and massive internal bleeding, his heart just couldn’t keep going. He was surrounded by family and love.
Bill recently retired as Chief Operating Officer and Chief Policy Officer for CARP National (also known as the Canadian Association for Retired Persons) Canada’s largest advocacy association for older Canadians. Bill founded the Nova Scotia Chapter of CARP Nova Scotia and was its Past Chair and Chief Spokesperson. On August 13th, 2026, he was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award for Volunteerism by the Hon. Mike Savage, Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia. Bill was fondly considered the Father of CARP in Nova Scotia and beyond. A natural leader and advocate champion for seniors; Bill will be sorely missed.
