Green space in cities provides a whole host of benefits, to humans and other creatures alike. Greenbelting plans, like the Halifax Green Network Plan, guide city growth in order to reduce urban sprawl and focus the development of sustainable neighbourhoods. In this presentation, Meredith and Karen will share the basics of Halifax’s Green Network Plan, its value, and what it can mean for conserving wildlife habitat and park space in HRM.

The two expert presenters are:

Karen McKendry, Wilderness Outreach Coordinator, Ecology Action Centre Karen spent her childhood exploring the woods and waters of Ontario and Quebec. Her passion for the environment, paired with a lot of hard work, has earned her a BSc. in Ecology, and Masters of Environmental Studies. Since moving to Nova Scotia in 2005, Karen has worked as a conservation planner and biologist, and led hikes and biodiversity-focused field trips for children and adults alike. When not devoting herself to the EAC’s good work, she can be found in her garden, paddling, cooking up a storm, or laughing with her two wild little boys.

Meredith Baldwin, Sustainable Cities Coordinator, Ecology Action Centre Meredith is motivated by a love for building and supporting connected communities. She is passionate about the collaboration between the public and non-profit sectors in urban planning.  Before starting with the EAC she worked as the Executive Director of Trips By Transit as well as with the Nature Conservancy of Canada where she helped in the effort to protect the Purcell’s Cove Backlands. Meredith completed a degree in Community Design & Sustainability at Dalhousie where she deepened her knowledge of urban planning. You can find Meredith hiking and swimming with her dog, Teddy, in many urban wilderness spots around Halifax.
